The weaning phase is one of the most delicate as it is essential for the adaptation of newly weaned piglets to their new environment and diet. The phase begins at 3-4 weeks of the piglet’s life and lasts until 9-14 weeks. Entrance to properly disinfected spaces, the adaptation of the animals to feed (to maximize consumption and minimising waste) and minimize heat loss by the animals (keeping them dry and insulated against cold surfaces and drafts), are some of the key factors in this phase. Animal well-being and feeding in transition are two fundamental aspects for ensuring a subsequently successful transition to fattening.
